Tullamore Harriers Report 4th June 2018

Track & Field Juveniles Produce Super Performances at All Ireland Schools

Despite threatening to rain on a number of occasions, there was dry if humid conditions throughout the Irish Schools Track & Field Championships held in Tullamore Harriers stadium on Saturday 2nd June. Aaron Keane, Moate Community College, Katelyn Farrelly, Oaklands Community College, Edenderry, and Evan Farrelly also Oaklands Community College produced super performances in one of the toughest competitions in juvenile athletics. Only 4% of all competitors entered in the schools track and field make it through to the finals, held each year at our own stadium. Katelyn was first up in the Junior Girls Long Jump, opening with a great PB of 522ccm, she kept the jumps over 5 mtrs after that keeping her in touch with the leaders and then produced another PB on her last jump of 528cm to finish in a super 5th. Aaron Keane in the Intermediate Boys took on the double of the 100m and 400m. In the 100m, he ran a huge PB of 11.07 to finish 5th in a very close contested race. In the 400m he also took a solid fifth spot. Both performances were outstanding for this young man who only 9 months ago decided to take on athletics full time. Evan Farrelly, also taking on the double in the Minor Boys, was first up in the 75m Hurdles. He ran a super race of 11:57 to be pipped on the line for second, but delighted to take the bronze medal. In the Long Jump his best of 504, a little off his usual, placed him 4th, 3cm from the bronze position.
Ava O’Connor continued her great season by leading out the Junior Girls 1500m rift from the gun. She went through 400m in 68 seconds with a small pack in her wake. Over the second lap she kept the pressure on and along with Cara Laverty from Derry. Ava led through the 800m mark in 2.26. Gradually Ava inched clear and by two hundred metres to go had s lead of ten metres. Only then did Maebh O’Neill from Waterford stack from behind. She passed Ava with fifty metres to go and Ava had to settle for silver. Still it was a great run from a fast improving athlete!
Danielle Donegan had started the day off for Tullamore Harriers in the Senior Steeplechase. She ran a great race to finish fifth in s tough field. Her time of 5.25 was a PB for Danielle who is only really getting used to the event! Philip King also ran a PB in the Intermediate Boys Steeplechase when he ran 4.49. He finished ninth in a tightly packed field which was led home by Dublin’s John Fanning in 4.38.
Well done to all representing their schools and the club with great performances.
