Tullamore Harriers Report 19th March 2018
All Ireland success for juvenile athletes
The All Ireland Indoor Juvenile Athletics Championships took place in Athlone IT on Sunday March 25th. Tullamore Harriers Athletics Club was well represented by young athletes who put in some excellent performances on the day.
Emanuel Ilori and Aaron Keane got the day off to a great start in the Boys U18 200 metres sprints. Both athletes were drawn in lane one in their heats and both put in very good performances to finish second in their heats to make through to the finals. In the finals, Emanuel ran a time of 23.81 seconds to finish 6th while Aaron put in a time of 22.67 seconds to set a new pb and finish 3rd overall to win a bronze medal.
In the Boys U14 60 metres hurdles, Evan Farrelly took to the blocks and ran a great heat in a time of 9.40 seconds to finish first and make it through to the final. In the final Evan raced out of the blocks and put in an excellent performance by finishing first to win the gold medal. Evan also set a new pb with a time of 9.23 seconds.
Katelyn Farrelly got her day off to a good start winning her heat in the Girls U16 60 metres hurdles in a time of 9.33 seconds to make it through to the finals. In the finals, against very tough opposition, Katelyn put in a great performance in a time of 9.19 seconds setting a new pb and winning the bronze medal.
In the Boys U13 long jump, Cillian Bourke put in a great performance in the first three jumps to make it into the top eight. Cillian jumped a distance of 4.32 metres to finish fifth overall. Well done Cillian.
Ava O’Connor finished off her indoor season with her first All Ireland gold medal after a commanding performance in the Girls U16 800m. Ava and her training partner Sian Corrigan had eased through the heats on Sunday morning and in the final both led the race out. Ava set a fast pace with the first lap going through in 33 seconds and she kept the pressure on in the second lap with a 34 second lap. She now had a small lead over the chasing pack. Over the last two laps she stretched her lead further and came home three seconds ahead of the Tipperary and Dublin athletes in second and third. Her winning time of 2:18.2 is a new PB. Sian should be proud of getting into the top eight in Ireland at these her first All Irelands.
Luke Duffy was the first Tullamore athlete out in the 800m races. He’d had a rugby match on Saturday and so was a bit tired and bruised. Still he put himself in good tactical positions in the Boys U14 race and only narrowly missed out on making the final. This is good experience for a very promising young talent. Philip King was also competing in his first All Ireland Indoors 800m. Again he was in a tough heat but ran a good race and will have learned a lot from the experience.
It was a great performance on the day by the young athletes at the indoor national athletics meeting, setting new pbs and claiming silverware. Well done and congratulation to you all.
