Tullamore Harriers Club Report 18th Oct 2021

Leinster Schools Indoor Pentathlon

Seven of our club Track & Field Juveniles headed to the National Indoor arena on Saturday to compete in the Leinster Schools indoor pentathlon. A tough but good developmental competition for young juvenile athletes to test all their skills, speed, strength and endurance. Representing Killina Presentation Secondary School Tullamore was Aishling Cotter in the intermediate girls and her younger sister Eimear in the junior girls categories. Tullamore College had five athletes; Katie Deverell, Sadhbh Keohane and Alisha Maher in the junior girls and Lucy Deverell and Martha Keohane in the minor girls. All the girls performed brilliantly against a tough field of athletes from all corners of Leinster. Aishling finished the best of the day in 5th place, just one spot away from making it through to the All Ireland championships. She has improved her position from her last time competing in 2019 where she finished 8th, and will remain in the Intermediate age group again next year. Keep up the great work Aishling and all your hard work will pay off. Eimear, Katie, Sadhbh and Alisha competed in an unbelievable tough age group in the Junior girls with the first four in the group scoring 3000 points while in previous years 2600 would qualify for the nationals. All four girls acquitted themselves very well in each event with Eimear finishing 7th, Katie 9th, Sadhbh 14th and Alisha 15th. Katie cleared 150cm in the High Jump breaking the club Indoor record. Congratulations Katie. Lucy and Martha made their deput in the Minor Girls Pentathlon competition. The girls held their own in a large and tough field of athletes finishing 11th and 18th respectively. Well done to all the girls on a great day of competition while representing their schools and club with great pride. Great results.

Paddy Larkin 3k.

On the actual 15th anniversary of the late Paddy Larkin’s passing, the annual Paddy Larking 3k race took place last Thursday night. While it was disappointing that due to covid 19 restrictions, the annual mass could not be facilitated, it was wonderful to see the great turnout of club members lining out for this very special club event. Paddy was honorary secretary from the foundation of the club in 1953 to his passing on October 14th 2006 and as Club Chairman Adrian Curley referred to in his pre race tribute ”Paddy was the Harriers….and the Harriers was Paddy”. Paddy devoted his lifetime to the development of Tullamore Harriers and is inarguably responsible for the wonderful facilities we are privileged to have within our club.

The race was the first on the newly laid track so it was a fitting gesture it was Paddy Larkin’s event that applauded this long awaited occasion. Fr Ciaran McGovern blessed the track prior to the race and then the runners set off on the 3k looped course taking in both the new track and the outer tarmac track in a figure of 8 loop.

Well done to all who took part.

Harriers Cross Country Roundup

Tullamore Harriers athletes Laura Mooney and Nadine Donegan competed at the Nuttycombe Invitational on Friday, October 15th in Madison, Wisconsin.

Laura Mooney competed well throughout the race finished with a 25th-place finish in 20:37 for the 6km distance, which was a great run when you consider how young Laura still is and the fact that over 350 women were competing. Nadine Donegan also raced well and her time of 21.31 is a great mark. Nadine said it was very tough to pace the race correctly with so many racing but she is clearly learning every race she competes in!

Aaron Mangan also competed recently in the FHSU Tiger Open Cross Country finishing 127th.

At the Autumn Open Cross Country in Abbotstown in Dublin Danielle Donegan competed well to finish 16th in a time of 22.03. Her run placed her 3rd U23 on the day and augurs well for the All Ireland’s next month. Emily Grennan also raced and got stuck in from the start. Emily fought all the way to finish 32nd in 24.44.

North East Galway 10k

Pauric Ennis for the 3rd week in a row, was on the podium again with a 3rd place finish in the North East Galway 10k road race. Pauric who claimed the Offaly Novice and Offaly Intermediate cross country titles in Coolderry over the past few weeks, had a great run clocking 34.06 for the 10k race. The race was won by Rathfarnham Ac’s Kevin Donagher (32.45). Great running Pauric.

Condolences
