Tullamore Harriers Report 11th February 2019
Leinster Juvenile Indoor Athletics Championships
A huge contingent of young Tullamore Harriers athletes travelled to Athlone IT on Saturday and Sunday, 09th and 10th, February, for the Leinster Indoors. There were some brilliant performances and all seemed to enjoy the two days of competition. In the middle distance competitions, the standout performance came from James Dunne in the Under 19 1500m. Moving up from his usual 800m, James led from the gun. He went through 800m in 2.04 and maintained his pace all the way to run 3.58, ten seconds clear of the next runner. He was six seconds faster than the previous championship record which had stood from 1996. Laura Mooney, Danielle Donegan and Ava O’Connor also medalled in their 1500m races. Laura’s time of 4.52 was a big breakthrough for her. In the 800m races, Philip King, Ronan Hyland and Ruby Steuven medalled. Ruby’s time of 2.19 was a huge performance for a relatively new runner. Sinead Walsh, Luke Duffy, Andrea Ryan and Saoirse Murtagh all made finals in their middle distance races and although they didn’t medal, they acquitted themselves well!
The sprints group got off to a great start with Grace McNally winning the Girls U12 60m in a time of 9.08 seconds to claim a gold medal. Shortly after, Evan Farrelly took to the blocks in the Boys U15 60m and ran a good heat in a time of 7.60 seconds. In the final he led all the way from the blocks to take the gold medal in a time of 7.55 seconds. Luke Bourke took part in the Boys U16 60m making it to the final. In the final Luke ran a good time of 7.62 seconds to take the bronze medal. In the Boys U17 60m Daniel Dowling put in a good performance against some tough opposition to run a great time of 7.44 seconds and claim a silver medal. There were good performances by Grainne Lawlor and Katelyn Farrelly in the Girls U17 60m. Both girls made it to the final with Grainne Lawlor pipped for the bronze in a time of 8.05 seconds. Luck was not on Katelyn Farrelly’s side as she was disqualified for a false start. Good performances were also shown by Cillian Bourke, Boys U16, and Shauna Slattery, Girls U13, making it to their finals in the 60m.
In the Girls U17 long jump, there were good displays by Katie Bourke and Katelyn Farrelly. Katelyn took the gold medal with a great jump and a new pb of 5.45 metres. In the Boys U15 long jump, Evan Farrelly put on a good display jumping 5.30 metres to take the silver medal. There was also a good display by Jack Saunders in the U16 high jump coming fourth with a jump of 1.60 metres equalling his pb. There was also a good performance by Niamh Galvin in the Girls U14 high jump. Niamh finished in the top eight setting a new pb on the day with a jump of 1.35 metres.
Day two started off with the 200m races. There were excellent performances from all athletes. Luke Bourke, Daniel Dowling and Grainne Lawlor all made it to their finals. Luke Bourke ran a brilliant 200m in a time of 23.95 seconds setting a new pb and winning the gold medal. Daniel Dowling also put on a good display in the U17 Boys 200m coming third and taking a bronze medal in a time of 24.03 seconds. Grainne Lawlor ran a good 200 metres by winning her heat in a time of 26.26 seconds. Unfortunately, she had to withdraw from the final due to injury. There were also good performances from Katie Bourke and Kate Cunningham in the 200m.
In the U16 Boys long jump, Jack Saunders put in a great performance on the day with a jump of 5.45 metres, a pb, to take the gold medal. Cillian Bourke also put in an excellent performance winning a silver medal in the Boys U13 long jump with a jump of 4.66 metres. Good performance was shown by Aishling Cotter in the Girls U14 long jump with a jump of 4.50 metres to finish fifth.
Day two ended on a good note with Evan Farrelly winning the final of the Boys U15 60m hurdles. In the final against tough opposition, Evan flew out of the blocks and came home in a time of 9.18 seconds to claim the gold medal. Jack Saunders also put in a great performance in the Boys U16 60m hurdles winning a silver medal in a time of 9.55 seconds.
