Tullamore Harriers Report 26th November 2018
Solid Performances by Harriers Juveniles at Irish Life National Cross Country Championships
A small group of Tullamore Harriers Juveniles made their way to Abbotstown in Dublin on Sunday last, 25th November, to compete in the Irish Life National Cross Country Championships. There were solid performances by these young athletes against some very stiff competition!
First up was Saoirse Murtagh. Saoirse was running out of her age but still she ran well over the 2 km distance and managed to come 33rd out of 170 athletes who finished the event. Her grit and determination were a huge advantage in such a big field of runners.
Next up was Sinead Walsh. Sinead too was running out of her age but still was very competitive. She had a good start and throughout the mile race was catching athletes all the way to the line. Her 18th place finish out of 140 runners was a huge result in this her first All-Ireland.
Luke Duffy competed in the Under 14 race and was prominent from the gun. Luke battled all the way and though he slipped back to 15th place, he is a big talent and will continue to be to the fore in these races as the years progress!
Ava O’Connor was in the lead of the Under 16 race. She is just back after a bout of the flu, but wasn’t afraid to compete against Ireland’s best. In the last lap she fought hard and her 6th place finish was her best run ever in a Cross Country All Ireland.
Ronan Hyland, in the Boys Under 16, was also in the lead group. He found himself off the back of this pack after 2km but he raced on and his determination meant that he finished a creditable 8th place. A huge run for a lad relatively new to Tullamore Harriers.
Finishing off the solid performances was Danielle Donegan. She was up near the front from the start and she was passing athletes all the way and should be happy with her 10th place finish in the Under 18 competition.
Irish Life National Senior Cross Country Championships
Following the juvenile races, Tullamore Harriers Seniors lined out alongside Ireland’s finest athletes for the Irish Life National Senior Cross Country Championships in Abbotstown on Sunday 25th November. Spectators were treated to very exciting races in all competitions. With European Cross Country places up for grabs both Ladies and Men’s races were packed with extremely talented athletes.
Ciara Mageean (UCD) took her first senior cross country title adding to her indoor and outdoor track titles for this year. Mucklagh native AnnMarie McGlynn (Letterkenny AC) had a stormer of a race to finish 3 seconds behind Ciara. Our ladies team of Nadine Donegan (48th), Dympna Fox (95th), Tara McKinney (97th), Evelyn Herlihy (100th) and Brigid Fox (101st) raced very well taking County silver medals in Grade B and 13th club place. Nadine was competing in the U23 age group too and she was 8th finisher.
The men’s race was won by Kevin Dooney (Raheny Shamrock AC) who too led a superb field of athletes. Our own Liam Brady ran a very solid race looking comfortable from the gun. Liam who took the Leinster Senior title 2 weeks ago settled into the chasing pack and finished 7th overall after another top performance. He was joined by teammates Pauric Ennis (127th), David Fox (135th), Glen Finlay (155th), and Mark Harpur who all ran very well in the high standard in Abbotstown. The lads were 14th club team and unfortunately didn’t have 6 to score for a county placing.
