Tullamore Harriers Report 25th June 2018

Irish Life Health Tailteann Interprovincial Games

Ava O’Connor moved up in age to compete in the Tailteann Games on Sunday, 24th June, in Santry in Dublin. Ava ran in a competitive field in the 1500m. The race went off at a blistering pace with the leading two passing 400m in 63 seconds. Ava sat back but even her 67 seconds was still very fast. Over the next lap she gradually caught the leading two and then with 600m to go she took the lead. She held on to her lead until one hundred metres to go but then Maeve O’Neill from Cork caught her. Ava’s silver medal is still a great return when you consider that Ava is eligible for this event for another two years. As an added bonus, Ava had run a fantastic new PB of 4.39, knocking 5 seconds off her previous best. Ava is now the third Harriers girl to break 4.40 for 1500m with Clare Rafter (4.35) and Niamh O’Connor (4.34) having also broken that barrier.
Philip King raced in the 1500m Steeplechase. He also started cautiously and in the first two laps sat back in ninth place. He then started to move and was passing athletes all the way to finish line. Unfortunately, he just missed out on a medal as he finished fourth. He is a steadily improving athlete and should be very proud of his run. His time of 4.43 a PB and he seems determined to keep improving.
Aaron Keane had a super day’s work, finishing 4th in the 100m in a time of 11.36, 4th in the 400s in 51.15, and he also competed in the 4 x 100m relay.
Well done to all on such fantastic results.

Irish Runner 5 Mile

The hot summer sun greeted over 1,000 athletes for the Irish Runner 5 mile in the Phoenix Park on Sunday morning, 24th June. Tullamore Harriers’ Lavinia Leahy posted 40:08 for the testing route and Olivia Weldon posted 47:50. Well done girls.
