Liam Brady competed in his first Irish University Track & Field Championships on Saturday last when he took part in the 5,000m. Windy weather conditions prevailed at the Athlone IT track and Brady sat in behind the chasing group in the opening laps as John Coghlan (DCU) and James O’ Hare (QUB) led the field. Liam, representing Dublin IT, gradually picked off all those ahead of him except Coghlan as he went through 3,000m in 9:09.6 and then pulled away from his rivals in the last 600m. He finished in 15:14.01 to take a well deserved silver medal 100 meters behind Coghlan.

Darragh Hanlon (UCD) had a busy two days at these championships. He showed his strength when finishing third in the 16kg Weight for Distance with a fine throw of 7.80 meters. He finished a very creditable fourth in the hammer with 37.96 meters and fifth in the discus with 39.22 meters. He also took ninth in the javelin with 27.88 meters to cap a busy few days.

Larry O’ Reilly (Athlone IT) had a great run in the 200m semi-final when finishing fourth in 23.01 seconds into a 1.4 meter head wind. This run qualified Larry for the final when he finished eight in 23.31 seconds. Eoin Delaney (UCD) also ran well in his 200m semi-final to finish fifth in 24.73 seconds. Fiona Hill (IT Carlow and Newbride AC), who is coached by Nick Hannon at Tullamore Harriers, won the Triple Jump with a fine leap of 11.08 meters in windy conditions.
