Great Performances at the Leinster Juvenile Athletics Championships

The Leinster Juvenile Athletics Championships were held in the Tullamore Harriers Stadium over the weekend, on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June. Over fifty young athletes from Tullamore Harriers took part in the Championships. The young athletes took park in track and field events as well as middle distance running, putting in fine performances on the day, setting personal bests, championship records and bringing home several provincial medals. The weekend got off to a good start with Evan Farrelly in the Boys U14 75m Hurdles. Evan won his heat in a time of 11.71 seconds setting a new championship record. In the final he stormed to the line in a time of 11.58 seconds bettering the championship record and winning a gold medal. Later in the U14 Boys Long Jump, Evan jumped a distance of 5.14 metres to win another gold medal. This was followed by a good performance from Cillian Bourke in the Boys U13 Long Jump. Cillian jumped a distance of 4.61 metres to win a silver medal. Katelyn Farrelly took to the track in the Girls U16 80m Hurdles. In a straight final Katelyn led from start to finish to win the gold medal in a time of 12.78 seconds. In the Boys U18 100m sprints, Aaron Keane ran an excellent heat in a time of 11.55 seconds to progress to the finals. In the finals, Aaron glided home in a time of 11.41 seconds to claim the gold medal. In the Boys U16 Long Jump, Michael Dowling and Diarmaid Finneran put in fighting performances. Diarmaid put in an excellent jump of 5.46 metres. This was followed with a jump of 5.47 metres by Michael, only a centimetre separating the two. Michael claimed the bronze medal with Diarmaid finishing fourth, both athletes progressing to the All Irelands. In the Boys U15 Long Jump, Jack Saunders jumped a distance of 5.03 metres to finish fourth and progress to the All Irelands. In the Boys U16 200m, Daniel Dowling ran a very good race in a time of 24.46 seconds to finish second and claim a silver medal. On day two, the day got off to another good start with Jack Saunders putting in a fine performance claiming the gold medal in the Boys U15 250m Hurdles. In the Boys U14 80m, Evan Farrelly took to the track and ran a great time of 10.20 seconds to take another gold medal. Katelyn Farrelly lined up again for the girls U16 Long Jump. Katelyn put on a very good display to win the gold medal with a jump of 5.18 metres. Katelyn jumped from the pit to the starting blocks to take part in the U16 Girls 100m final. She ran a good race to finish fourth in a time of 12.91 seconds to qualify for the All Irelands. Luke Bourke took to the track in the Boys 200m finals. Luke ran a good time of 25.06 seconds to claim second place and a silver medal. The second day finished on a high with Aaron Keane in the U18 200m. Aaron flew out of the blocks and led all the way to the finish line to win another gold medal in a time of 22.80 seconds. Good performances were also shown by Aishling Cotter in the Girls U13 Long Jump with a massive pb of 4.48 metres to finish fifth, Luke Bourke in the Boys U15 100m final, Shauna Slattery in the Girls U15 100m final, and Kate Cunningham and Katie Bourke in the Girls U16 200m. Over 1500m, Tullamore picked up two more medals. Ava O'Connor took the lead in the Girls U16 race from the gun and led all the way. She eased down over the last lap but her winning margin was still almost thirty metres. Aaron Mangan ran a new PB in the Boys U19 1500m. He led early on and was with the lead pack until a lap to go. Only two seconds separated the top three at the finish line and although Aaron finished third he should be delighted with his new PB of 4:04. In the Girls U16 800m, Ava O'Connor again led from the front. She brought the lead pack through half way in sixty-six seconds and on the next lap they slowly faded away as Ava held on for victory by a second over Nessa O'Reilly from Louth. James Dunne also medalled in the U18 800m. He held the lead twice in the last lap but narrowly missed out in the fight for the finish line and took silver. Danielle Donegan just started competing in Steeplechase races two months ago. She's a keen student of the event and is improving all the time. At the Leinster's she raced over the 2000m distance and came away a clear winner in the U18 event. After the race it turned out that Danielle had broken the existing Leinster record. Her time of 7:30 well ahead of the 2011 record of 8:47 held by Elaine McCabe. In the Boys U18 race Philip King also set a new record. Philip sat back in the early stages of his 3000m race and only over the last kilometre did he edge towards the lead. His time of 10:20 twelve seconds ahead of the record that Dean Holmes had set in 2016. Dearbhail Cuddy was also in action in the Steeplechase. Dearbhail ran 8:11 in her first race over the distance. She finished second but is steadily improving at the event and hopes to run well in the All Irelands. Danielle and Philip also medalled in their 3000m races. They took gold and bronze respectively in tough races blighted by a very strong wind. Others to compete well in the middle distances were Ruby Steuven, Cian Law, Roisin Betson, Aisling Cotter, Emily Cunningham and Emer Cotter. Well done to all the young athletes who participated in the Leinster Championships over the two days.
